About A Quixotic Life

Started in September of 2003 as "Escaped Code Monkey" hosted on Blogdrive. It began as a way to chronicle my life during college and offer up my thoughts and observations to whoever would listen. Now I find myself able to look back on the good times, the dark times, and the crazy times. Years later, I still scrawl my existence on the Internet; continuing to see dragons where others may only see windmills.

Two Points for Honesty

“If that’s all you will be
You’ll be a waste of time
You’ve dreamed a thousand dreams
None seem to stick in your mind
Two points for honesty
It must make you sad to know that
Nobody cares at all”
- Two Points for Honesty by Guster

The DFL senate candidate Al Franken declared victory today after the recount canvassing board certified the results of the 62-day recount process (full story).  As a recently adopted Minnesotan, after having lived in two states that clearly didn’t want me, I’m somewhat glad to see the end of the tunnel. Coleman’s attorneys have already declared that they are going to challenge the result, but I believe this is a huge mistake.

I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be to have come out of a terribly vicious campaign ahead on election night, only to have the victory reversed by a later recount.  Before I get to far into this, I voted for Coleman on election day and was somewhat wary of having somebody who has expressed relatively extreme views in the past (if Rush Limbaugh were to run, I would not vote for him either).

Despite my hesitation, I think it is imperative that we are able to move on as a state and have both of our senators early on in what is likely going to be a busy year for elected officials all around.  If Coleman is able to challenge the results of the recount, it could be months before anything is decided.  At that point even if Coleman were to somehow claw his way back to victory, it would alienate many of his constituents and embroil us in a whole new session of bitter partisan rivalry.

We need to move on both as a state and a nation and turn to face the problems before us.  So I’m calling on Norm Coleman to respect both the decision of the recount officials and the needs of his own constituents by stepping aside.  This would certainly demonstrate to me his compassion for his state and garner my full support in any of his future endeavors.

I think New Year’s Day serves as a good example of the paradox that is the human experience.  There is really no difference between December 31, 2008 and January 1, 2009.  The sun rises and sets on a world that is relatively unchanged, but somewhere in our hearts we still cling to the idea that the new calander brings about a new opportunity.

We celebrate the end of the year in excess and mild recklessness and then turn to face the coming year with a sense of renewed hope for future possibility.  It is this fundamental cycle of death and rebirth which encapsulates man’s faith in his ability to make a fresh start of it all.

So let us learn from our past, live fully in the present, and hang our hope in the future.

“I wanna be where I’ve never been before
I wanna be there and then I’d understand
Know I’m right, and doing right
Could I get to be like that
How to know, but I don’t know
I’ve nothing more to gain”

Say I freeze meat in January. The package has an expiration date of February. When I thaw it in June, why doesn’t it remember immediately that it should have gone bad four months ago?
